Two questions settle most of it
What is the shirt made of? Cotton rules out sublimation entirely. Standard polyester carries dye migration risk. Blends need a product rated for them — Insta DTF publishes cotton, cotton-poly blends, low-bleed polyester and canvas.
How many colours, and how much detail? Anything photographic or halftoned rules out cut vinyl. Single-colour block art keeps every option open.
Answer those two and usually one method remains.
The four methods
| DTF | Screen-printed transfer | Sublimation | Cut vinyl | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
| Dark shirts | Yes, opaque white | Yes | No | Yes |
| Photographic art | Yes | Limited | Yes | No |
| Colour count cost | None | Per colour at setup | None | Per layer |
| Equipment beyond a press | None if bought finished | None if bought finished | Sublimation printer | Plotter |
| Hand feel | Smooth satin | Varies by product | None | Vinyl layer |
For most t-shirt work on cotton or blends, finished transfers — DTF or screen-printed — win because they need no second machine and no colour-count penalty.
Insta's t-shirt transfer range
Insta organises the heat transfers hub by market, which maps well onto t-shirt work: team sports apparel and uniforms, performance and active wear, health care, brands and eco-friendly, industrial and workwear, and casual wear.
- Insta DTF — photo-realistic, unlimited colours, short or long runs, stretchable, smooth satin finish, water-based non-phthalate / non-PVC inks.
- SuperFlex — for shirts that stretch hard.
- Fastrans — general-purpose screen-printed.
- Aquatrans — water-based, eco-positioned.
- Tuftrans II — workwear durability.
- High Density HPF — raised finish.
A heat transfer sample pack is available for testing on your own blanks before committing.
Pressing them
Insta DTF's published window:
| Setting | Insta DTF published value |
|---|---|
| Dwell time | 12–15 seconds |
| Temperature | 285–295 °F / 141–146 °C |
| Pressure | 50–70 psi |
| Peel | Peel hot |
| Minimum line weight (white) | 1 pt positive, 2 pt negative |
| Minimum line weight (colour) | 2 pt positive, 2 pt negative |
| Shelf life | One year from date of shipment |
Procedure: preheat and stabilise the press, pre-press the shirt to remove moisture and wrinkles, position the transfer adhesive-side down, press for the full dwell, peel as specified. Insta DTF is a hot peel; check every other product's sheet separately.
For durability, the machine matters as much as the transfer. Insta specifies even pressure and temperature distribution across the entire platen and fast heat recovery between applications — and warns that cheap presses produce transfers that may not apply properly or that crack and peel prematurely.
Sizing a press for t-shirts
A standard adult full-front print wants a 16" x 20" platen — the Insta 256 ($2,595.00) is the natural manual choice, with a swing-away upper for unobstructed loading and quick-swap accessory platens.
Left-chest, sleeve and youth work fits the Insta 201 ($815.00-$835.00, 13" x 13"). At volume, the Insta 718 ($5,450.00, 15" x 15") and Insta 728 ($5,495.00, 15" x 20") are the automatic options; oversized and all-over prints need the Insta 828 ($6,795.00, 20" x 25").
Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Send artwork through the quote form or call 562.404.3000.
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
