Mistake one: lighting everything

Even illumination is the default outcome of buying fixtures without a plan, and it is the single most common failure.

Depth at night comes from contrast. A scheme works because some things are lit and the space between them is not - the eye reads the dark intervals as distance. Light every surface evenly and the yard collapses into a flat, bright plane with no foreground or background.
