1. The garment comes first
Fabric content decides which transfer families are even eligible, so settle the blank before the decal. Insta DTF publishes cotton, cotton-poly blends, low-bleed polyester and canvas. InstaGlo covers cotton and cotton blends, polyester and polyester blends, Dri-Fit and moisture-wicking, spandex and Lycra. Tuftrans II targets industrial and workwear.
Two properties matter beyond the fibre name. Stretch: a decal on a performance garment must stretch with it, which is why stretchability appears as a published feature on Insta DTF and InstaGlo. Dye migration: standard polyester bleeds under heat, which is why Insta specifies low-bleed polyester for DTF.
2. Artwork format and line weight
Vector is the safe answer — Insta's DTF process guidance specifies vector formats such as EPS or AI so the design prints clearly and accurately.
Then check the published minimums at final imprint size:

Check at the size you will actually print. A logo that complies at 10 inches wide fails at 3 inches.
3. Finish and effect
Finish is a separate decision from colour, and it selects the product line.

- Retroreflective — InstaGlo at 380 candela power, silver.
- High stretch — SuperFlex.
- Water-based, eco-positioned — Aquatrans.

4. Quantity, and how it interacts with shelf life
Quantity drives per-unit price, so the instinct is to order deep. The constraint is shelf life: Insta publishes one year from date of shipment.
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
For a uniform programme with rolling intake, that supports ordering to a 12-month draw-down — Insta notes excess transfers can be stored and applied on an as-needed basis. Ordering a three-year supply to hit a price break does not work.

Each product type ships with its recommended settings. Insta DTF:

Confirm your press can hold that window evenly before you commit a run. Insta's own guidance in its DTF material is unambiguous: cheap heat presses will garner cheap results, and transfers may not apply properly or may crack and peel prematurely.
